When Gibson moved their factory from Kalamazoo, Michigan to Nashville, TN, they started using a new bridge style for the Les Paul models. The new bridge model (now referred to as the 'Nashville' bridge) used big metal studs for the bridge posts to screw into, instead of the bridge posts screwing directly into the maple top. The new post/stud system made for easier adjustment, but in turn, a great deal of tone was sacrificed to make this change. The old one is the better sounding bridge, due to the more direct transfer of energy, but the only way to have this is to either spend thousands on an antique instrument, OR doing a fairly risky and expensive mod to a newer instrument.
